Robert Bays (? - ?)
Limited information currently known on Robert Bays, he married Ann (maiden name unknown) and they had three children that I know of Robert (1783), Thomas, and Ann Roberts (1786).

62 - Robert Bays (1783? - 1840)
Born in London on the 13th July 1783 and christened at St Swithin, London on the 3rd August 1783 (to be proven?). Robert married Margaret BROWN in 1801 and they had seven children Robert John (1804), Francis, Henry, Matilda, Alfred and Mary Ann (1817), Thomas (1819). In 1840 Robert lived at 10 Bedford Street, Whitechapel Road, Middlesex.

Robert was a salesman working at Leadenhall Market, London, selling cheese, butter and eggs. I have some Old Bailey court proceeding records where on two occasions Robert was stolen from and on one occasion he was called as witness to a fraud banknote case - transcripts of these cases will appear on the web-site shortly.

Robert died at 10 Bedford Street on the 30th October 1840, aged 65, of asthma, the informant was Ann Bays of 13 Great Alie Street, Whitechapel. To view transcripts of both Robert Bays and his son Francis Bays last will and testament, please click here.

On the 1841 census Margaret Bays was living at 30 Holmes Street (?), Tower Hamlets with her daughter Mary Ann and her husband Walter Marsh. Margaret Bays died at 29 Warner Street, Southwark on the 5th January 1849, aged 73, of paralysis which she suffered from for 4 months, the informant was her daughter Matilda Reed.


31 - Mary Ann Bays (23rd May 1817 - ?)
Born on the 23rd May 1817 and christened on the 22nd June 1817 at Saint Swithin, London. Mary Ann married Walter John MARSH a poultry salesman on the 4th July 1840 at the Parish Church in St George in the East, Middlesex, their witnesses were Robert Bays and Matilda Bays. On the marriage certificate Mary Ann gave her address as 10 Bedford Street, London and Walter gave his address as 10 Cannon Street Road, Christchurch.

Walter and Mary Ann had eight children Mary (1842), Matilda (1843), Susanna (1850), Frederick (1852), Henry (1854), Alfred (1856), Walter (1858), and Clara (1860). On the 1861 census the family lived at 5 Gloucester Terrace, Bermondsey, Southwark, Surrey.
